How to Set Up a Post-Purchase Survey on Shopify
By Dino Correia, Founder, Agaya Cloud
Setting up a post-purchase survey on Shopify sounds simple - send an email, ask a question - but doing it well means getting a few specific pieces right: what triggers the send, what the survey actually asks, and where the answers end up.
How to Add a Post-Purchase Survey to Shopify
At a high level, adding a post-purchase survey to a Shopify store comes down to five decisions:
- Pick the trigger event - fulfillment or delivery confirmation, not order creation.
- Decide the send window - 24-48 hours after delivery is the window where feedback is most accurate.
- Write SKU-level questions - ask about the specific product ordered, not the order as a whole.
- Send it as its own message - separate from marketing flows, clearly labeled as a survey.
- Route responses to somewhere reviewed on a schedule - a dashboard or alert, not an unread inbox.
The rest of this post covers why each of those choices matters and what goes wrong when they’re skipped.
Trigger It Off Delivery, Not Order Date
The most common mistake is triggering a survey off the order-confirmation event, because it’s the easiest one to hook into. The problem is that a survey sent at order time is asking about an experience the customer hasn’t had yet. What you actually want is a trigger tied to delivery confirmation - a fulfillment or tracking event - so the survey lands in the 24-48 hour window after the product physically arrives, while the reaction is still fresh.
Tie the Survey to a Specific SKU, Not Just the Order
An order can contain multiple products, so a single “how was your order” question can’t tell you which item drove a low score. A well-set-up survey asks per product where an order contains more than one, or at minimum names the primary SKU in the question itself - the difference between usable, SKU-level product data and an ambiguous whole-order score you can’t act on.
Keep the Survey Outside Your Marketing Sends
A post-purchase survey competes with every other automated Shopify email a customer receives - shipping updates, upsell flows, review requests. Sending it as its own distinct, clearly-labeled message (not folded into a marketing template) measurably improves both open rates and how trustworthy the ask feels.
Route Responses Somewhere Usable
The most common failure after a survey is technically “live” is that responses land in a spreadsheet or a raw form-response inbox that nobody reviews on a schedule. Before launching, decide where responses need to end up to actually get used - a dashboard reviewed weekly, a Slack alert for low scores, or a feed into whatever commerce analytics stack the team already checks regularly.
Decide What Triggers Escalation
Not every response needs a human to look at it. Decide upfront what should trigger proactive follow-up - a very low satisfaction score, a specific complaint keyword, a cluster of similar answers on one SKU in a short window - so the survey produces action, not just a growing archive of unread answers.
