Food Waste Is a Post-Purchase Blind Spot, Not Just a Consumer Problem

A product selling well isn’t the same as a product being used well. For food, beverage, and other consumable brands, a real share of what customers buy is never fully consumed - and almost none of that shows up anywhere in a brand’s own data.

The Gap Between Sold and Used

Point-of-sale and order data answer one question: did the product sell. They have nothing to say about what happened next - whether it was finished, partially used, or thrown away untouched. That gap between the shelf and actual consumption is invisible by default, not because brands don’t care about it, but because nothing in a typical commerce stack is built to measure it.

Why This Matters Beyond Sustainability Optics

Unused product isn’t only a sustainability talking point - it’s a signal a brand is otherwise blind to. A product that’s frequently left half-finished is telling you something: portion size may be wrong, a pack size doesn’t match how it’s actually consumed, or the product didn’t meet expectations enough to finish. None of that shows up in sales data, which looks identical whether the product was loved and used to the last drop or bought once and forgotten in the back of a cupboard.

Where the Signal Actually Lives

The only reliable way to know how much of a product goes unused is to ask the customer directly, tied to the specific product and pack size they bought. That’s a different question than satisfaction - a customer can be satisfied with a product and still not finish it, and consumption pace data captures that distinction in a way a star rating never will.

Turning It Into a Decision

Once consumption and waste data exist by SKU and pack size, it becomes actionable: adjusting pack sizes to match real usage, flagging products where waste is high enough to reconsider the format, or feeding reorder timing off actual consumption rather than an assumed average. Without that data, all of this stays guesswork.
